Beyond Frames: How to Eliminate Input Lag in Browser Games

High FPS is great, but if your character reacts a second after you click, you’ve already lost the game. Input lag—the delay between your physical action and the on-screen reaction—is the silent killer of browser gaming performance. At Exgamez.com, we’ve identified the top tweaks to make your controls feel instantaneous.

1. Optimize Your Mouse Polling Rate

Many high-end gaming mice have polling rates of 1000Hz. While great for desktop apps, some browsers struggle to process this much data, actually increasing lag.
Tip: Try lowering your mouse polling rate to 500Hz or 250Hz in your mouse software. You’ll often find the movement feels much smoother in a browser environment.

2. Disable “Smooth Scrolling” in Browser Flags

Browsers use “Smooth Scrolling” to make web pages look pretty, but this post-processing can add a tiny delay to how the browser handles input commands.
Action: Type chrome://flags in your address bar, search for “Smooth Scrolling,” and set it to Disabled.

3. Use the “Game Mode” on Windows 11

Windows has a built-in feature that prioritizes system resources for gaming. Even if you’re playing in a browser, Windows 11 can recognize the high GPU usage and limit background processes.
Setup: Go to Settings > Gaming > Game Mode and ensure it is toggled ON.

Exgamez Setup Tip: During our tests on our dedicated 78×118 cm setup, we noticed that using a wired mouse instead of Bluetooth reduced input latency by nearly 15ms—a life-saving difference in fast-paced action games.
